Continuing our series on the power of confession, this week we delve further into the creative power of our words, learning how to train our tongue according to the Word. Jesus told His disciples, “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22). As believers, we already possess faith in our spirit man — as God has given each of us the measure of faith (Romans 12:3). The Bible calls us to operate in this faith, following God’s example of using words to bring things into existence. From the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth by speaking. Genesis 1:2 describes a chaotic and dark world, yet when God said, “Let there be light,” light emerged. This demonstrates that words have the power to create and bring order. As God’s children, we too are called to speak life into our situations, aligning our words with His will. Throughout Genesis 1, we see that God consistently used words to frame the world. He didn’t end at merely envisioning things — He spoke them into being. This is a model for us: we must speak what we want to see. Our words articulate the dreams and visions in our hearts, bringing them into reality. God’s words were specific, creating exactly what He envisioned. Likewise, we must be intentional with our words, speaking life daily and trusting that our words have the power to manifest God’s will in our lives.
Our Lord Jesus, following the Father’s example, also used words to bring things into alignment. And though Satan often hides behind issues to frustrate us, the Bible instructs us to identify and resist him, and he will flee (James 4:7). Jesus taught His disciples, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says” (Mark 11:23). The mountains we face in life are often intangible issues, and we must speak directly to them, addressing them by name, because anything with a name can hear you and must bow at the name of Jesus. We must be specific and unwavering in our declarations, not allowing doubt and unbelief to take root. We must deal with doubt decisively, else it undermines our words, making us double-minded and unable to receive anything from God (James 1:7). Our words not only express our faith but also condition our hearts to believe. As we speak, we minister to ourselves, building strong convictions and shaping our lived reality.
In the kingdom of God, there are absolutes: you are either speaking life or death, light or darkness — there is no middle ground. This is why it is crucial for us to consistently speak the right words, believing that whatsoever we say will come to pass. Our tongues are powerful weapons, and the words we speak affect not only others, but ourselves even more. Therefore, it is essential to speak positively about ourselves, aligning our thoughts and words with the Word of God. Hebrews 11:3 tells us that “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,” underscoring the creative power of words. However, Satan tries to deceive us into thinking that speaking to situations and circumstances is futile — don’t listen to him! Don’t stop speaking! Reject doubt and confidently declare that your words will bring results. In Mark 11:24, Jesus teaches us that whatever we ask for in prayer, and believe we have received it, we will have it. The key to receiving is found in the place of prayer, not just in the manifestation of what we desire. When we pray, we must believe we have already received what we ask for, even if the physical manifestation comes later. Scripture teaches us that receiving happens first in the spiritual realm, and we must continue to thank God for it, even before it materializes. Just as Daniel’s prayer was heard the moment he prayed (Daniel 10:12), we must believe that our prayers are answered at the moment we pray. From that point on, we should start thanking God, bringing our faith into full conviction. Saints, let us watch over the words we speak, ensuring that they align with the life and blessings available to us through Christ.
Prayer
Father, we thank You for the authority You have given us to frame the world around us, and the wisdom to guard our tongues, speaking only that which aligns with Your Word. May our confessions always reflect Your Truth, bringing light to ourselves and those around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
