The Power Of Focus (II)

As we continue our series on the power of focus, we delve deeper into how the Scriptures guide us in cultivating a single heart and mind through the Word. Our thought patterns shape how we live and determine how far we can go in fulfilling our divine purpose. Isaiah 55:7 invites us to align ourselves with God’s way of thinking, saying, “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” The message is clear: we simply cannot afford to live according to what seems right in our own eyes, but must live according to the standard of God’s Word, which provides a clear framework for how we should live, urging us to focus on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). Anything outside of these parameters deviates from godly thinking, but when we align our thoughts with His, we begin to think as He thinks, positioning ourselves to experience His best for us. This is why Proverbs 4:23 instructs us to diligently guard our hearts by establishing intentional boundaries for our thoughts that reflect God’s Truth because when we stay within the boundaries of His Word, we experience the joy and good inheritance He has prepared for us (Psalm 16:6).

In Matthew 6:22, the Lord Jesus emphasises the importance of divine thinking, teaching that “if your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light.” A single eye represents a heart and mind fixed on God and His Word. When our spiritual vision is locked onto God’s Word, His Truth illuminates every area of our lives. Psalm 119:130 affirms this, saying, The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. By continually meditating on Scripture, we allow its light to transform our thoughts, decisions, and actions. Furthermore, Psalm 119:105 shows how the light of God’s Word brings clarity and gives us direction, saying, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Saints, the Word of God is crucial for our daily living, saints, so let us put a premium on it. Reading further the words of the Master, we learn that ”if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness” (Matthew 6:23). An evil eye signifies an unfocused or divided mind that is turned away from God’s truth. James 1:7-8 describes such a mind as unstable and unproductive, unable to receive from the Lord. To walk in the light of Christ and the fullness of the blessing, we must remain single-minded in our devotion to Him.

Apostle Paul offers a powerful lesson on focus in Philippians 3:13-14, saying, “I forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead, pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” In order for us to progress in our spiritual journey, we must be resolute and deliberately focused on the right things. We cannot move forward if we are constantly looking back or distracted by past failures. Let us keep our eyes fixed on the eternal prize, which is the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Colossians 3:1-2 reinforces this, saying, ”set your hearts and minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This means intentionally choosing where we place our focus and affections. Our hearts are like a compass, and it is our responsibility to direct them toward the Kingdom. King David exemplified this, declaring, “The zeal of the house of the Lord has consumed me” (Psalm 69:9). Likewise, the household of Stephanas, who ”devoted themselves to the service of the Lord’s people” (1 Corinthians 16:15). Their focus on things above was not limited to personal devotion, it extended to joyful service within the Body of Christ, because being focused on Christ means investing in what matters to Him: His Church. As we encourage fellow believers and meet the needs of the saints, we fulfil Christ’s command to love one another and care for His sheep.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to forsake the wicked ways of this world, and to intentionally focus on Your precepts. Teach us to set our hearts and minds on things above, and let our lives reflect the faithfulness of one who walks closely with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
