How to be effective in spiritual warfare

One of the most important lessons every believer must learn is how to engage effectively in spiritual warfare. Whether we recognise it or not, we are in active warfare. But thank God for He has not left us powerless. The Apostle Paul writes, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). Our strength does not come from human wisdom or natural ability, but from the Lord Himself. Our victory is found in depending fully on Him and walking in the truth of His Word. As Scripture reminds us, “in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). And although Satan is a defeated foe through Christ, we must enforce our victory against him by relying on God’s strength. Paul therefore instructs us, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). We are not to wear only part of the armor, because partial protection leaves room for vulnerability. God has equipped us for this battle with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (vs.14-17). Each piece enables us to stand firm against the enemy’s attacks: truth exposes deception, righteousness guards our hearts, faith extinguishes fear and doubt, salvation protects our minds, and God’s Word equips us to overcome every lie. Victory is therefore not achieved through our own strength, but by walking in what God has already provided.

One of Satan’s greatest weapons is deception. This is why Paul warned the church in Corinth, “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11). The enemy rarely attacks openly. More often, he works through lies, doubts, wrong perceptions, and thoughts that contradict God’s truth. This makes the mind one of the primary battlefields of spiritual warfare. Scripture warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6), reminding us that ignorance gives the enemy an advantage. But the antidote for deception is Truth, which is why the Lord Jesus declared, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). From the Garden of Eden, Satan’s strategy has remained the same: first questioning God’s Word, then leading man into deception by causing them to doubt what God has spoken. Our adversary’s goal has always been to move us away from God’s Truth. Therefore, we must remain vigilant and hold fast to His Word.

Because the battle is fought in the mind, Paul reminds us that “though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh” (2 Corinthians 10:3). Many battles are lost because we respond from emotion instead of truth. Yet, “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (vs.4). Strongholds are patterns of thinking that oppose God’s truth. They often manifest as fear, pride, unforgiveness, worry, envy, or false beliefs about God and ourselves. Saints, God does not want us to live under the influence of these strongholds, but to be made free by His Truth. This is why the Word instructs us to “cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (vs.5). We must reject every thought that contradicts God’s Word and bring it into submission to Christ. This is why mind renewal is so essential. As Paul writes, “do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). A renewed mind enables us to discern God’s will, walk in obedience, and experience the freedom He has prepared for us.

Church, spiritual warfare is real, but so is the victory Christ has already won for us. Although the enemy seeks to deceive, God has given us everything we need to stand firm. As we put on the whole armour of God, renew our minds through His Word, and bring every thought into obedience to Christ, we will walk in the victory He has already secured for us. Hallelujah!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory You have given us through Jesus Christ. Teach us to depend on Your strength rather than our own, and to put on the whole armor of God so we can stand firm against every scheme of the enemy. We choose this day to continue renewing our minds through Your Word and walk in Your truth always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
