This week, we learn how to stir up the joy of the Lord until it overflows in our lives. As believers, we must understand that true joy has only one source: God Himself. Many people mistake happiness for joy, yet they are not the same. Happiness is a natural response to favourable circumstances, while joy is a spiritual virtue that flows from our relationship with God. This joy already resides in our spirit, and as we continuously stir it up, we remain steadfast regardless of what we face.
Joy is not the absence of difficulty, which is why Scripture describes believers as “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” (2 Corinthians 6:10). Unlike happiness, which comes and goes with changing circumstances, joy remains because it is rooted in Christ. The Apostle James therefore exhorts us to “count it all joy when we fall into various trials” (James 1:2), reminding us that it is possible to remain joyful even in difficult seasons, being confident that God is with us. Unfortunately, many people spend their lives chasing earthly possessions or achievements to make them happy, but saints, true and lasting joy is found only in God. So we must guard our hearts against attaching eternal value to fleeting pleasures. David understood this when he so boldly proclaimed: “In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). And because the Holy Spirit carries the presence of God, He is also the source of the joy that strengthens and sustains us. It is no surprise then that joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Apostle Paul exhorts us, saying, “Do not be drunk with wine … but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). As we yield ourselves to God’s Spirit, He fills us with the joy that comes from God’s presence. Paul then shows us practical ways of stirring up and expressing this joy, saying: “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (vs.19-20). Worship, thanksgiving, and fellowship keep our hearts centred on God and create an atmosphere where His joy overflows. This joy is not meant to remain hidden – it should be evident in the way we live. Even in difficult seasons, there should be a song in our hearts, a smile on our faces, a spring in our step, and a confidence that God is with us.
Finally, joy is one of our greatest spiritual defences against discouragement, fear, and hopelessness. To the natural mind, responding with joy in the midst of adversity may seem foolish. Yet Scripture reminds us that “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise …” (1 Corinthians 1:27). What appears weak in the eyes of the world often becomes the very means through which God displays His strength. This is why the enemy seeks to rob us of our joy, knowing that discouraged believers are easier to distract and keep in bondage. But the prophet Nehemiah declared, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep … Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:9-10). The joy of the Lord strengthens us to keep trusting God when circumstances are challenging. Likewise, Psalm 2:4 tells us that when the nations rage against the Lord, “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh.” What confidence! Even when the world is in turmoil, God remains in complete control. We too can choose to rejoice, not because life is easy, but because our hope is anchored in Him.
Church, the joy of the Lord is not based on a life without trials, but on a faithful God who never changes. Therefore, let us remain in His presence, continually stir up the joy His Spirit has placed within us, and choose thanksgiving in every season. As we do, His joy will strengthen us, overflow from our lives, and become a testimony to everyone around us. Hallelujah!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the joy that comes from knowing You. Help us to anchor our joy not in changing circumstances, but in Your presence and promises. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit, and teach us to continually stir up the joy You have placed within us, that we may be strengthened in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Shoo! Such a powerful Word. We don’t have to wait for something to happen in order to be joyful, because joy is already in our human spirit – we just need to keep stirring it up so it has free expression. So much to learn🙌🏻
