Conditioning of the Heart (iv)

As we conclude our series on the Conditioning of the Heart, today we focus on how to consistently maintain the perfect peace we have in Christ even in the midst of challenges. The truth is, the state of our mind and the condition of our heart shapes who we become in life and how we respond to life situations, because “… as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Isaiah 26:3 promises, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Experiencing peace requires us to consistently keep our thoughts centered on God. This peace does not mean the absence of problems, but the assurance that God is with us, even in seemingly unfavorable circumstances. True peace is not governed by circumstances, nor is it subject to the happenings of the physical realm. The Bible reassures us, ‘And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 4:7), enabling us to believe God’s Word and accept it as the ultimate authority beyond what our natural senses may perceive. It is therefore crucial for us to live according to the Spirit in order to maintain this peace, ‘For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace’ (Romans 8:6). Scripture further emphasizes that ‘those who are in the flesh cannot please God’ (vs.8). Faith operates beyond the realm of senses and the flesh, and ‘without faith it is impossible to please Him’ (Hebrews 11:6). Therefore, we must constantly meditate on the Word and maintain a life of prayer, so we are equipped to respond with faith on the day of adversity.

Luke 6:45 and Matthew 12:35 highlight the importance of keeping watch over the contents of our hearts, saying, ‘A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil.’ What we treasure within us inevitably shapes our words and actions. If worry takes root in our hearts, our responses to life situations will reflect just that. However, Philippians 4:6 offers a remedy for swiftly uprooting worry before it affects our belief system, saying, ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.’ And rather than being consumed by worldly concerns, the Bible encourages us to cast all our cares upon Him, for He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). If left unchecked, worry can easily pave the way for fear to take hold in our hearts, as demonstrated in the story of Job: ‘For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, for trouble comes’ (Job 3:25-26). This narrative illustrates the danger of allowing fear to establish residence in our hearts. Fearful thoughts can inadvertently attract the very things we dread, leading to great unrest. However, aligning our thoughts with the Word of God brings peace of mind. Church, refuse to succumb to fear! Dispel it from your dwelling!

In closing, let us reflect on Apostle Paul’s exhortation to the church in Colossae: ‘And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful’ (Colossians 3:15). The Greek word for “rule” means to arbitrate or govern, indicating that peace should guide our decisions – not emotions, senses, or any other influence. We must train ourselves to be sensitive to God and the leading of His Spirit; if there is no peace, we should refrain from proceeding. All decisions must align with the Word of God, as deviating from the Word often results in a lack of peace. Therefore, let us commit to setting the Word as the standard for our lives, allowing His peace to govern our hearts and minds, to ensure that our decisions are sound and grounded in divine wisdom. By doing so, we will cultivate a heart that is conditioned to trust in God, leading to a life marked by His perfect peace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank Your Word which brings light and understanding. May Your Word dwell richly in our hearts, guiding our thoughts, actions, and decisions. We choose to stay our minds on You, so we can experience the perfect peace that surpasses all understanding. We acknowledge that true peace comes from You alone, and that it is not dependent on our circumstances. We choose to cast our cares on You, knowing that You care for us. And we are confident that Your peace continues to guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
